Institute for OneWorld Health Honored at Skoll World Forum as one of World's Top 50 Social Innovators

Non-profit Pharmaceutical Company Honored for Contributing to More Sustainable and Equitable Global Economy

The Institute for OneWorld Health, the US-based non-profit pharmaceutical company that develops drugs for people with neglected infectious diseases in the developing world, today announced it has been selected to “The Phoenix 50 List” which recognizes innovators, entrepreneurs and investors who are making significant contributions to building a more sustainable and equitable global economy and forging innovative business models focused on resolving social, environmental and financial challenges.

The Phoenix 50 List was unveiled today at the Skoll World Forum 2009 in Oxford, UK, and is featured in a new report: The Phoenix Economy: 50 Pioneers in the Business of Social Innovation. The report was published by Volans, a think-tank/consultancy dedicated to the business of social, environmental and governance-related innovation, with backing from the Skoll Foundation, SustainAbility, Singapore’s Economic Development Board, Net Impact and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It explores how leading entrepreneurs, government agencies, investors and businesses around the world are developing and scaling market solutions to a broad array of economic, social, environmental and governance challenges.

The Phoenix 50 List – available online at www.volans.com – was chosen by surveying several hundred social and environmental entrepreneurs and networks of sustainability and business thinkers and experts from around the world.

“OneWorld Health is honored to be included among the social innovators effecting change in unique and enterprising ways, and we thank Volans for recognizing our efforts to provide safe, effective and affordable new medicines for the world's neglected communities,” said Dr. Richard Chin, OneWorld Health's CEO.

In addition to OneWorld Health, other Phoenix 50 List members include large multinational companies such as GlaxoSmithKline , sustainability-focused investors like Generation Investment Management co-founded by former US Vice-President and Nobel Prize winner Al Gore and smaller outfits with inventive products and services such as Belgium-based Apopo which trains sniffer-rats to detect landmines, and CellBazaar of Bangladesh which provides a cell-phone based virtual marketplace for the poor.
