Institute for OneWorld Health Hosts Global Health Seminar at AAAS Annual Meeting

Three-Panel Session Highlights Bay Area Global Health Initiatives and Social Entrepreneurs

San Francisco, CA - February 14, 2007

The Institute for OneWorld Health, the first nonprofit pharmaceutical company in the United States, will bring together a distinguished group of the world’s experts in global health for an all-day seminar on Friday, February 16, at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Francisco. The seminar will highlight the intersection of science and global health and its positive impact on improving the health and well-being of people in the developing world.

“Once viewed as too costly, science and technology are playing a key role in addressing vexing global health problems,” said Victoria Hale, PhD, Founder and CEO of the Institute for OneWorld Health, “and often social entrepreneurs are leading the way.”

The three-part seminar taking place at the Renaissance Parc 55 Hotel, Level 4 - DaVinci Room from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, includes presentations by some of the best and brightest minds in global health, unique contributors from the Bay Area, perspectives from the field and social entrepreneurs. Participants include

The Bay Area is home to some of the world’s leading global health social entrepreneurs and innovators - individuals who have developed novel solutions and paved new paths to save lives and fight illness.

The first session, “Global Hearts: The Contributions of Bay Area Professionals to Health,” features Bay Area organizations committed to impacting global health.

The second session, “From Inception to Implementation: Delivering Innovative Programs In Developing Countries,” will feature representatives from non-governmental organizations working in remote areas of developing countries. Panelists will discuss the challenges and success that they experienced, citing specific examples from their own work.

In the third session, “Creativity from the Outside: Social Entrepreneurship and Corporate Responsibility,” panelists will describe how they are applying business disciplines to improve livelihoods in many different nations and to serve the greater good. The panelists operate programs in countries where people subsist on less than $2 per day.
