Institute for OneWorld Health CEO Awarded The Economist Innovation Award For Social and Economic Innovation

Victoria Hale, Ph.D., Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for OneWorld Health, was last night announced the winner of The Economist Innovation Award for Social and Economic Innovation at the Millennium Mayfair Hotel, London. The awards are designed to highlight the importance of individual thinking and innovation in the business world.

Dr. Hale created OneWorld Health, the first nonprofit pharmaceutical company in the U.S., to develop safe, effective and affordable medicines for people in developing countries. Since its founding in 2000, OneWorld Health’s pipeline has grown to include treatments for diseases that plague the world’s poorest people, including malaria, pediatric diarrhea, visceral leishmaniasis and Chagas disease.

Following the awards, Dr. Hale participated in a half-day interactive summit run by The Economist that aims to educate industry leaders on the importance of investing in innovation and putting good ideas into practice quickly and effectively to gain competitive advantage. Speakers at the summit include Tom Standage Editor of The Economist’s Technology Quarterly and Jeff Levick, Director of Vertical Markets, Google.

The Institute for OneWorld Health, the first U.S. nonprofit pharmaceutical company, develops new, affordable medicines for infectious diseases that disproportionately affect people in the developing world, including visceral leishmaniasis, malaria, diarrhea and Chagas disease. OneWorld Health applies its entrepreneurial business model with a staff of experienced pharmaceutical scientists that identifies promising leads and drives development from pre-clinical studies to clinical trials through regulatory approval. The Institute for OneWorld Health, headquartered in San Francisco, Calif., is a tax-exempt 501(c) (3) U.S. corporation (http://www.oneworldhealth.org/) ).
