Hale, Ph.D will receive one of Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year awards at a gala reception in New York City this evening. Glamour has identified Dr. Hale as one of a select group of women leaders who are making a tremendous impact on key global issues. “I am deeply honored by this recognition, and gratified that it will allow a larger audience to learn about OneWorld Health’s efforts to develop safe, effective, and affordable new medicines for those in developing countries who need them the most,” said Dr. Hale. Dr. Hale will be honored with a select group of well-known leaders in business, politics, philanthropy, science/medicine, education, entertainment, sports, and fashion. Previous Women of the Year award winners include Hillary Clinton, Madeline Albright, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, Billie Jean King, and Somaly Mam. Dr. Hale’s recognition by the women’s magazine further reflects mainstream America’s growing interest and concern with global health issues in developing countries. “We are delighted to recognize Victoria Hale among this year’s winners“ said Cynthia Leive, Glamour magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, “her innovative global health programs are can help save the lives of millions of families worldwide and we hope with this award we can help bring greater attention to OneWorld Health’s inspiring work.” The Women of the Year gala at Lincoln Center will draw more than 2,000 VIPs. A special edition of the magazine will also highlight OneWorld Health’s programs to develop lifesaving medicines for the world’s poorest individuals. This is the eighteenth year of the magazine’s awards. Dr. Hale established her expertise in all stages of biopharmaceutical drug development at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, and at Genentech, Inc. She presently maintains an Adjunct Associate Professorship in Biopharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Hale’s other recent honors include being elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies and named a 2006 John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellow. Other recent achievements include selection as a Senior Ashoka Fellow by the Ashoka Foundation for work in leading social innovation (2006), Executive of the Year by Esquire Magazine (2005), The Economist Innovation Award for Social and Economic Innovation (2005), and the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship from the Skoll Foundation (2005). She was named one of the “Most Outstanding Social Entrepreneurs” by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship in Switzerland (2004).
