PROJECT SUMMARY
 
The Sr. Scientist will be a member of the Diarrhea Program team. S/he will be the primary scientist on the program providing scientific expertise, designing and executing experiments, drafting research plans and budgets for key scientific and pre-clinical activities in support of the development of anti-diarrhea treatments. The Sr. Scientist will establish strong working knowledge of the current literature and technology pertinent to the research activities.  S/he will also provide scientific evaluation of new lead candidates in the diarrheal disease therapeutic area, and potentially leads the effort in drafting and submitting grant applications of the selected opportunity.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned.
 
  • Applies fundamental scientific principles in understanding and communicating complex scientific issues related to diarrheal diseases and planning and performing research and preclinical studies to support diarrheal disease project(s), and the anti-secretory project in particular
  • Designs and implements key scientific experiments to support the understanding and validation of the drug mechanism of action
  •  When necessary, works with outside consultants to design and implement key studies including ADME, pharmacokinetic/ pharmacodynamic studies to support the development and regulatory filing of drug candidates
  • Participates in the screening and selection of contract research organizations and academic institutions to implement experiments
  • Monitors and reports progress of scientific collaborations
  • Establishes a strong working knowledge of literature and technology pertinent to current research activities and recommends improvements/ innovations in response to identified needs
  • Provides scientific evaluation and input on new project opportunities in area of expertise
  • Prepares reviews of relevant literature on new diseases and technologies to support decision-making
  • Prepares, plans, compiles, writes and edits technical grant proposals

Job Requirements:

SKILL SET REQUIRED:
 
  • Attention to detail along with excellent quantitative analysis and documentation skills are required
  • Proven ability to analyze and summarize results in written scientific reports and memos
  • Designs, implements and supervises preclinical research studies in support of mechanistic investigations, discovery, and pre-clinical and early stage clinical development efforts
  • Effectively communicates experimental results to supervisor, immediate group and relevant teams as appropriate
  • Familiar with drug development process, track record of successfully leading project team or sub-team
  • Highly motivated, excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a matrix environment.
  • Ability to plan and execute multiple tasks
  • Show flexibility and demonstrate ability to prioritize to meet project and team needs
 
 
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D in biomedical sciences required; postdoctoral research in gastrointestinal physiology, infectious/diarrheal diseases a plus
  • 5 to 7 years relevant experience in a pharmaceutical/biotech/CRO industry (or equivalent setting)
  • Drug development team or sub-team leadership experience is a plus
  • Good project management skills and ability to manage external collaborations and consultant experts as needed to support project needs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build productive cross-functional collaborations with a multi-disciplinary project team and various support groups while performing these duties
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are essential. Competency in the use of analytical techniques and information management is preferred
  • MS Office, MS Excel and MS Project proficiency
