The Institute for OneWorld Health announced the appointment of Richard Chin, M.D., as its new Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Chin is a Harvard trained, Board Certified Internist, with extensive expertise in drug development. Dr. Chin has overseen over 40 Investigational New Drug (IND) Applications for new molecular entities and new indications, as well as eight New Drug Applications (NDAs)/Biologic License Applications (BLAs), and has authored a major textbook on clinical trial medicine.
OneWorld Health Sent Delegates to the UK to Discuss the Control and Treatment of Diarrheal Diseases in the Developing World The British Consulate-General San Francisco organized a visit of US global health experts to the UK in early October to discuss the control and treatment of diarrheal diseases. Diarrheal diseases kill approximately two million children under the age of five in developing countries each year, more than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. The meeting included specialists from the UK government, such as the Department for International Development, research organizations and funding bodies who discussed the problems of diarrheal disease around the world and explored potential joint initiatives and collaborations to combat the problem.
The iOWH Artemisinin Team Participated in the 2008 Artemisinin Enterprise Conference The Artemisinin Enterprise together with the Roll Back Malaria Partnership held an international malaria conference October 8-10 at the University of York, UK. As a stakeholder in the Artemisinin Enterprise the OneWorld Health Artemisinin team participated in the conference titled Meeting the Malaria Treatment Challenge: Effective introduction of new technologies for a sustainable supply of Artemisinin Combination Therapies.
Dr. Victoria Hale Inducted into Institute of Medicine of the National Academies
OneWorld Health’s founder and board chair, Victoria Hale, Ph.D., was inducted into the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in October 2008. Members are elected through a highly selective process by the incumbent membership on the basis of professional achievement and of demonstrated interest, concern and involvement with problems and critical issues that affect the health of the public. Those elected to the Institute of Medicine’s membership have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health.
The Institute for OneWorld Health to Celebrate the Book Launch of AWEARNESS On November 17, 2008 iOWH will join San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Kenneth Cole, and the Good Business Network to celebrate the launch of AWEARNESS: Inspiring Stories About How to Make a Difference. Edited by longtime advocate and designer Kenneth Cole, Awearness is an engaging, informative, and empowering collection of eighty-six stories and conversations by ninety individuals who have been inspired to do their part to effect meaningful social change. The collection includes an essay by Dr. Victoria Hale, Ph.D. Founder and Chair of the Board, iOWH.
OneWorld Health and BioFocus DPI Expand Collaboration to Develop New Drugs for the Treatment of Childhood Diarrheal Diseases BioFocus DPI, the service division of Galapagos and the Institute for OneWorld Health announced that they have expanded their 2006 collaboration in diarrheal disease drug discovery. In 2006, BioFocus DPI and the Institute for OneWorld Health initiated a collaboration to develop new drugs against childhood diarrheal disease in developing countries. Under the expanded collaboration, BioFocus DPI is performing a high-throughput, cell-based functional screen to identify potential new drugs for the treatment of diarrheal diseases. The “hits” identified in this screen will be confirmed through a series of activity assays developed by BioFocus DPI specifically for this drug target.
Institute for OneWorld Health Announces Hiring Of Susan Moriconi as Vice President of Human Resources
OneWorld Health recently announced the appointment of Susan Moriconi as Vice President of Human Resources. Ms. Moriconi will serve as a key member of OneWorld Health’s executive leadership team and provide human resources leadership and expertise to all levels of the organization in both the San Francisco and India offices. She brings more than two decades of experience helping organizations manage growth, change, corporate culture and talent recruitment and retention.
New Charm from Pandora Jewelry Inspired by the work of Victoria Hale, Pandora Jewelry designed the “OneWorld Health” charm for Pandora’s signature charm bracelets. For every charm sold, Pandora will donate $20 to the Institute for OneWorld Health. A sparkling water drop shape dangles underneath the charm as a symbol of the lifesaving hope OneWorld Health provides with every drop of medicine it develops for those who need it the most but can afford it the least.
